Steve,
I just found this site this morning. I noticed right off that there seems to be little use of the message board. I think that it is because the general public is unaware of the importance of the War with Mexico. As a Californian I think we focus on the Bear Flag revolt and dismiss the War with Mexico as a minor subject. We also dismiss the whole issue of Mexican California as irrelevant. Maybe we do this unconsciously to support prejudice.
Mexican California and pre Civil War California, concentrating on the Rancho period, are my major interest.
In case you 've not read my response to Sue, I'm involved with the restoration and programming of the Dana Adobe - Rancho Nipomo (danaadobe.org). Our major event in May has as its theme "Tavelers on the El Camino Real 1838-1858". This time covers the period that Captain Dana lived on the rancho. The location, on the El Camino Real between Monterey and Santa Barbara, makes it an important site in the overland experience between northern and southern California. This year we had 40+ reenactors participating.
If C Company would be interested in being a part of our 2006 event please let me know. Having a US Dragoon presence would certainly add to our program.
HAPPY TRAILS, Russ.
